Company Registration Number and CIN

Ask ten founders what their company registration number is, and half of them will read out the CIN, and the other half will look confused. The two are closely related but not the same, and confusing them can cause small but annoying problems on bank forms, tender documents, and MCA filings. Here’s a good way to think about their relationship.

  What is CIN?

CIN, or Corporate Identification Number, is a unique 21-character alphanumeric code issued by the Registrar of Companies to every company incorporated in India. Think of it like the company’s permanent ID card. There’s a surprising amount of information in a single string.

Decoding the 21 Characters

Each segment of a CIN has a significance. For example, see U74999DL2020PTC123456:

  1. The first letter is the listing status: L for listed companies and U for unlisted
  2. The next 5 digits are the industry code, based on the main business activity of the company
  3. The next two letters are the state in which the company is registered, e.g., DL for Delhi
  4. The following four digits represent the year of incorporation
  5. The next three letters identify the company type, e.g., PTC for a private company or PLC for a public company
  6. The last six digits make up the company registration number

So, Where Does the Registration Number Fit In?

The company registration number is the last 6 digits of the CIN. This is a serial number allotted by the concerned Registrar of Companies at the time of incorporation and is unique in the records of that ROC. That is why the same six digits can technically appear in another state's CIN, but the full 21-character string never repeats.

What You Need to Have One

You don't apply for a registration number. You create it when you create the company itself. Prior to that, there are a few basics that needs to be ready: At least two directors (for a private limited company) or one director (for a one-person company), at least one director being an Indian resident, a valid Digital Signature Certificate for each director, a Director Identification Number, an available and approvable company name, and a registered office address in India.

Required Documents for Company Registration Number and CIN

You will be asked to submit PAN and Aadhaar of the directors, proof of address, passport-size photographs, proof of registered office such as a utility bill along with a rent agreement and owner’s no-objection certificate where applicable, and a draft Memorandum and Articles of Association reflecting the objects of the company and internal rules.

How to Get the Process of Company Registration Number and CIN

The whole process is done through the SPICe+ form on the MCA portal. All the name reservations, director details, capital structure, and office information are completed in one integrated application with supporting documents attached electronically. The Registrar issues the Certificate of Incorporation upon approval of the application, and the certificate includes both the CIN and the company registration number. Usually, the company’s PAN and TAN are also allotted.

Other Things Worth Knowing CIN is not just a formality crammed into a certificate. Section 12 of the Companies Act, 2013 mandates companies to display it on letterheads, invoices, notices, and other official communications, so any mistakes here will be visible everywhere.

In case you lose it, you can find the CIN on the MCA portal instantly, where the company's master data is stored. Whenever the company shifts its registered office to another state, converts to a different type, or gets listed, the CIN on your documents needs updating. Some parts of the CIN, like the state code, company type, or listing status, can change in such cases.

Incorporation seems straightforward until name rejections, document mismatches, or MCA queries slow the process. Corpzo takes care of company registration from start to finish, covering name approval, SPICe+ filing, and obtaining the Certificate of Incorporation with your CIN so that founders can kick off operations without any incorporation headaches.
